15 Songs, 56 Minutes

EDITORS’ NOTES

If you listen closely to the sensitive covers of Bon Iver, Fleet Foxes and The National that appeared on Birdy’s 2011 eponymous debut album, you’ll hear plenty of clues about the influences that also inform her second studio endeavour. Recorded at Abbey Road Studios, Fire Within is another disarming showcase of the British vocalist’s ethereal, agile singing ability. But if the songs here seem even more personal, it’s for good reason—the album is her first effort as a songwriter. Working with Dan Wilson (who co-wrote and produced ADELE’s “Someone Like You”), Rich Costey (whose production credits include Sigur Rós, Muse and Arctic Monkeys), and Mumford & Sons’ Ben Lovett, the young singer shines on big-hearted, piano-driven folk-rock tunes like “Wings” and “All You Never Say”.
