Weber: Der Freischütz

Weber’s Der Freischütz—about a marksman determined to win his love with the help of magic bullets—is one of the great 19th-century German operas. It’s a pre-Wagnerian tale full of fantasy, peril and passion with a score packed with atmosphere and descriptive power. In this riveting new version, conductor René Jacobs brings his customary freshness and vitality to Weber’s music, thanks to his thrilling singers (who also deliver the opera’s spoken dialogue with absolute commitment and verve) and the boundless energy of the Freiburg Baroque Orchestra. And there’s a bonus: The libretto’s original prologue, discarded by Weber in a moment of ill-advised editing, is here reincorporated by some imaginative recycling of some of the composer’s music, restoring the pivotal role of the Hermit to its rightful place.
