Wazup Guy: The Album

With 2014’s Wazup Guy: The Album, lawyer-cum-artist Folarin Falana officially introduced the world to his musical persona: Falz. Wrapping fun, humour, wit and sociopolitical gleanings in his laidback Yoruba flow, he explored a range of topics across the 19-track offering that offered a path into the mainstream. “This is a project that means a lot to me and my career,” he tells Apple Music. “This was my debut album, and apart from being a very concise introduction of the Falz brand, for me it represents taking bold steps when you feel the conviction to.” After he’d previously scored a hit with 2009’s mixtape cut “Shakara”, it was the Poe and Yemi Alade-featuring “Marry Me” that would catapult his career—the single would score him a Best Collaboration of the Year nomination at the 2015 Nigeria Entertainment Awards. Keeping his momentum going, the Lagos native released other singles including the Fela Kuti-sampling “123”, sprightly “Cool Parry” and Afrobeats “Toyin Tomato”, helmed by DJ Woske—who contributed to the album alongside producers Spax, Kid Konnect, Epic Tunes, Studio Magic, Adey, Crown Prince, Tin Tin and JRS.
