The Floacist Presents Floetry Re:Birth

The Floacist Presents Floetry Re:Birth

Former Floetry frontwoman Natalie Stewart’s sophomore studio album under The Floacist moniker finds her singing more confidently and assertively. But there are also traces of bitterness laced in her lyrics that take aim at Marsha Ambrosius (who left Floetry to go solo in 2007). Add to that an album title that hints at taking back (or “rebirthing”) Floetry, and there’s a palpable tension eminent when Stewart sings, "Where you wanna be/ It's not for me...I just can't sell my soul" in the slow-burning standout jam “Soul.” But don’t think that all of Floetry Re:Birth is riddled with resentment. The opening cut “Start Again” is a radiant tune that drips golden R&B honey over a simmering groove with ample help from guest singer Raheem DeVaughn. And the following “Children Of The Sun” contrasts complex drum patterns with languid soul. Stewart’s more seductive side surfaces throughout Floetry Re:Birth, especially in the mellow reggae rhythms of “This Love” where her breathy coos are sure to garner a few Sade comparisons.
