12 Songs, 57 Minutes

EDITORS’ NOTES

Indie has never been shy of sensitive young men with would-be anthems, but this debut album threatens to set Hampshire, England’s Blaenavon apart. The sheer ambition of these songs is initially quite startling—tracks like “Take Care,” “I Will Be the World,” and “Swans” frequently swell, swoop, and soar into towering epics—and there’s further joy to be found when the band dial back the earnest. “Lonely Side,” with its snake-hipped guitars, for example, shows there’s also plenty of rug-cutting fun to be had.
