EDITORS’ NOTES

Trip-hop was plenty bleak to begin with, but Massive Attack's third album reached new extremes of desolation. The beetle on the cover is a good indicator of the menace inside. Tempos crawl. Vocals are pitched between a whisper and a growl. Even the milk is black in their midnight world. Hip-hop beats and dub bass come cloaked in paranoid atmospheres, but the all-encompassing sense of dread is never anything less than electrifying. On "Teardrop", featuring Cocteau Twins' angelic Elizabeth Fraser, the storm clouds briefly part—a reprieve that only accentuates the heaviness of the rest.

Dope. Still tight 20 years on

It’s got crackle, bass and totally dope loops. Teardrops is totally an anthem and the whole record is rock.

Bleak? Sometimes darkness can be uplifting

... a CD I cluelessly picked up in the late 90s that still resonates with me. Dark, evocative and hugely satisfying at the end of an evening

Essentials Top 5 list

First bought this upon release and has been a pivotal part of my listening pleasure. Excellent production and flow from start to finish, each song has its part to play. Must have bought this a few times over the years but don't think I would be without this, somewhere, Man Next Door still pings my receptors frequently. Look forward to Jan concert. Buy it!!
