Korngold: Orchestral Works, Vol. 4

Korngold’s only symphony is curious for having had its first performances broadcast on the radio from a studio—its first concert performance took place 15 years after the composer’s death. It’s a staggering piece that Wilson and the Sinfonia of London play with dazzling skill, whether in the lugubrious slow movement or the scampering, almost Shostakovian bitterness of the “Finale”. Theme & Variations was one of Korngold’s final works, an unapologetically cinematic set of melodies on a theme described by the composer as “like an Irish folk tune”. Korngold spent much of his early career reconstructing, reviving and championing “The Waltz King” Johann Strauss II’s work, to which Straussiana is a wonderful homage. Featuring mazurkas, polkas and of course waltzes, it’s irresistibly nostalgic, especially given Korngold’s choice not to return to Europe at the end of World War II.
