SVN

SVN

A farewell by the iconic Skwatta Kamp posse, SVN at once captures the crew’s journey, South Africa’s progress and the trajectory of hip-hop in the country. Fittingly, the album title represents the group’s original seven-member core and the “sex, violence and nudity” disclaimer assigned to Skwatta Kamp’s music. Addressing social issues, notions of legacy and all forms of love, the veterans intersperse their trademark wordplay across boom-bap, electronic and kwaito-infused beats. Simultaneously nostalgic and refreshing, an inter-generational mix of collaborators (Aewon Wolf, Junior, Assessa, RJ Benjamin, Max-Hoba, Sketchy Bongo, Payseen and Gemini Major) contributes to an entertaining blend of the traditional and contemporary. At its heart, SVN highlights the trade-offs of traversing South African hip-hop’s evolution, with “In the Name of Love” serving as an ode to the early days, “O.G” being a testament to the group’s longevity and “There You Go” paying homage to the legacy of Flabba “through the bloodline of brotherhood”. The ethos of family similarly runs through “Mfana Ka Gogo” and “Risking It All”, while the album hits celebratory notes on the party jam “Umama Akekho”, the libatious “Gimme Gimme” and the tropical “Holiday”.
