Space Is Only Noise

Space Is Only Noise

Nicolas Jaar’s debut album uses electronic means—glowing synths, pitched-down samples, skittering drum machines—for decidedly non-electronic ends. Following an eerie, ambient opener, “Colomb” sets the album’s mood with swirling Rhodes chords and Auto-Tuned vocals—it’s part ballad, part tone poem. “Too Many Kids Finding Rain in the Dust” takes Jaar’s songful sensibilities spelunking in a dubby echo chamber outfitted with red-velvet textures and Middle Eastern strings; the equally atmospheric title track goes moonwalking atop a post-punk bassline while Jaar’s boomy voice seduces the listener.
