Apple Music Home Session: Kokoroko

London’s Afrobeat innovators Kokoroko pay tribute to one of Nigeria’s most important and influential musicians by covering Afro-funk pioneer William Onyeabor’s “Body and Soul” for this Apple Music Home Session. “‘Body and Soul’ is such a classic for us,” trumpeter-vocalist Sheila Maurice-Grey tells Apple Music. “We wanted to share a version with you and put a spin on it. It was just energy. We just got in the room and vibed to the song.” The eight-piece also recorded a new version of single “Something’s Going On”, which was the first track to break cover from their August 2022 debut album Could We Be More. “We’ve chosen to do a special version for you all,” says percussionist Onome Edgeworth. “We hadn’t been in a studio since recording the album, so it’s been nice and fun to be in that space once again. It was amazing to spend time experimenting with sounds and different styles as well as figuring out new ways to tell our stories as a band, but also as individuals. [After the lockdowns] we all have been super grateful and appreciate the beauty of being in the moment—whether it be onstage, making music in the studio or spending time with family and friends.”
