Deerhoof approach rock music with a childlike sense of playfulness, foregrounding colourful keyboard parts and singer Satomi Matsuzaki's whimsical melodies. But with the addition of new guitarist Ed Rodriguez, their ninth album shows Deerhoof staying weird yet hitting harder than ever. Opener "The Tears and Music of Love" is a nonstop carousel of sharp riffs, "Fresh Born" sets spidery, contracting fret spasms over a roiling funk groove and the title track merges Afropop-inspired guitar picking with an epic sweep worthy of The Who.
