Driven by Carina Bragg’s beautifully fragile voice, Mirror Fury’s music transmits heartbreak, frustration and small-town dreams of escape with stunning acuity. There are echoes of Joy Division in the frozen synths of “Thistles”, while a spartan cover of R.E.M.’s “The One I Love” restates the darkness in a break-up song regularly mistaken for a romantic ode. “Skinful” is the staggering centrepiece: with just a piano and Bragg’s emotional eloquence, it journeys incisively into the aching heart of a life being unfastened by grief and alcohol.
