Not content to coast on the moderate success of their 2001 debut, Five Star Laundry, Melbourne’s Motor Ace came back a year later with a more internationally inspired follow-up that surprised everyone by debuting at No.1 on the ARIA charts. Described at the time as “post-grunge” and sounding somewhat like an antipodean Oasis—whom Motor Ace supported on the latter’s 2002 tour—the band captured a global sound that carried synth-driven “Carry On” and the anthemic “Keeping Secrets” into high rotation on both mainstream and alternative radio. Frontman Patch Robertson’s drawn-out vocal delivery matches the album’s overall laidback vibe so that even the crescendos feel relaxed and unworried. There’s a warmth spread across Shoot This, evoking the internal cosiness that comes from wandering a familiar city or listening to the ubiquitous pop-rock of your teenage years and still remembering all the words. Motor Ace’s third album, Animal, landed in 2005 with more of a farewell atmosphere, but this is the one that best captures their winning combination of accessibility and personality.
