She Plays Bass - Single

This garage-rock single couldn’t have come from purer beginnings. Bea Kristi (aka beabadoobee) and her best friend were jamming together when the track was born. “I came up with chords and Eliana played a sick bass part,” she tells Apple Music. "I was like, ‘Holy crap, I’ve got to make this into a song.’ I sat on it for a while and then ended up writing the song about her, my best friend.” Over that punchy bassline, her dreamy vocals encapsulate their intuitive team spirit. “I can't play bass. I have these crazy melodies in my brain that I can't do, but she comes up with the exact same thing and I don’t know how the hell she does it. She brings it to life. We've played this song live and it's honestly the best feeling. The last bit where I sing, ‘Wish I was more like you,’ we always tell each other that, and onstage, we scream it to each other.” Celebrating their friendship and female musicianship is at the heart of this track. “There was a lack of female Asian musicians when I grew up. It was really hard for me to find someone that looked like me who I could idolise. But I’m glad I didn't have to stick to any stereotype. I'm just going to keep on doing what I'm doing.”
