“This is me,” Stefflon Don tells Apple Music. “This is the me I haven’t been in a little while. This is like the cool me. I went back to the old me with this tape.” The London (via Jamaica, Birmingham and Rotterdam) MC feels she has a point to prove with this mixtape—a desire to flex skills last truly seen on 2016’s Real Ting Mixtape. “I’ve always wanted to be a rapper who can sing, not a singer who raps,” she says. “But a tape situation is not as serious as an album. It’s not take-a-year-off-social-media shit.” This freedom gave Steff the chance to explore the full breadth of her appeal. The hypnotic “Jellio” is a bullish show of braggadocio, “Pretty Girl” should soundtrack any holiday romance and “Uber” is as good an ode to app-aided, late-night hookups as we’ve heard. Steff’s favourite, though? “I love ‘Precious Heavy',” she says. “It reminds me of Rick Ross. It just feels so gangster. And it feels like it would be a gas video. I really want to go to Buckingham Palace and shoot a video with a drone, but my drone would get shot down so that’s probably not happening. I would really love a drone situation.”
