Positive Rising, Pt. 1

Positive Rising, Pt. 1

After three albums as a duo, Shane Parsons and Simon Ridley have officially become a trio with the full-time recruitment of live guitarist Lachlan Ewbank. That invites a whole new dimension of sounds and ideas without dampening the throttling party-punk thrashers we’ve come to expect from DZ Deathrays. If many of these songs stretch out in surprising ways, the reckless Friday night travelogue “IN-TO-IT” reinforces the Brisbane band’s unflinching honesty. Parsons’ battle-ready roar comes out in full force, though he gets a run for his money when The Bronx singer Matt Caughthran cameos on “Year of the Dog”. Visceral and satisfying, these down-and-out anthems seize on those impactful moments when reality seems almost too intense to handle. “Try to make a lost connection just in case I disappear,” describes Parson on opener “Hi Everyone”, a song that belies its nonchalant chorus to hit squarely in the feels with earnest call-outs to immigrants, family members and the dead and unborn alike.
