Poles Apart

Poles Apart

Afrikaans rock music was in need of a wake-up call—and in 2001 it received just that in the form of Karen Zoid’s Poles Apart. Fronted by the original rock chick herself (along with her long-time backing band) she staked her claim loud and proud with a cover of the traditional Afrikaans folk song “Afrikaners Is Plesierig”. With the industry sitting up and paying attention she then continued to showcase her skills as a musician, vocalist and songwriter through follow-up hits such as “Engel”, “Yuppie Scum” and “Southern Sky”.
