London may be the capital of grime and UK rap but this compilation is a reminder that excellent tracks are being produced across the country. Showcasing the controlled intensity of Birmingham rapper JayKae, “Hoods Hottest” is an imperious opener, and the quality never drops across the remaining tracks. In particular, Fredo justifies the support Drake’s shown him on Beats 1 with a vivid, unvarnished account of coming up on London’s Mozart Estate (“Nothings New”), while Nottingham’s Splinta stands out for his absorbing introspection on the soulful “Getting Mine”.
