Más Tiempo Vol. 1

The majority of DJing side projects today—from Diplo’s excursion into dancehall pop-punchers (as Major Lazer) and Richie Hawtin’s hyper-focused spin-off Plastikman—are the result of performers (famous faces) taking stylistic turns with minimal detection or fuss. Understandable, perhaps, if they’ve spun the same show for three consecutive summers. For new UK house imprint Más Tiempo (it means “more time” in Spanish)—helmed by grime legends Jammer and Skepta—this switch-up represents a long-held dream to return to their roots. Before pioneering London’s grime phenomenon in the mid 2000s, early stints as DJs—for Tottenham’s Meridian Crew (Skepta) and East London’s N.A.S.T.Y Crew (Jammer)—and as “top producers”, to recall Jammer’s cult dubplate release, laid the foundation here. Vol. 1’s “Groovestar”—a slick, Detroit-leaning track—provides an easy initiation into the gameplan: a swift adventure through infectious styles, signatures and persistent patterns of music that marked those younger days. The release of vocal-led, double-sided singles in 2023—“Touching My Body” with Etta Bond, and Skepta’s “Can’t Play Myself (A Tribute to Amy)”, dedicated to Amy Winehouse—fast-tracked the arrival of Más Tiempo, alongside iconic debut sets at London’s Drumsheds, Ibiza’s DC10 and a Circoloco night in Milan. But both tracks are intentionally absent on this debut collection, a greater call to the underground. For the UK polymaths, this EP of frenetic floor-fillers should ensure that the good times—and set slots—run for more marathon nights when the superclubs swing open.
