Unearthed from the band’s vaults and released over 20 years following its recording, Live ‘83 reveals British doom-metal champions Witchfinder General to be just as awesome in a live setting as they were in the studio. Recorded at Tiffany’s in Manchester on July 6th, 1983 and at The Palais in Humberstonegate, Leicester on July 7th, 1983, this collection abounds with the band performing songs from their first two albums, Death Penalty and Friends of Hell. Fans of doom metal might appreciate that Witchfinder General tended to play their songs a little slower than the recorded versions, making for a slightly sludgier feel starting with “Free Country” where Phil Cope’s raw riffs recall Tony Iommi’s trademark Black Sabbath tone. As Zeeb Parks wails and sings about his various vices, it’s evident that the man was comfortable and confident on stage, especially with the band’s namesake tune where he lets his voice break and shriek more than heard on the recorded version. A longer and darker sounding version of “Quietus” finds Parks crooning with throaty inflections to sound like Ozzy’s next of kin.
