Invicta

Invicta

This emo-pop-punk band's third album is where it turns up the volume and expands its horizons. Taking Back Sunday producer Mike Sapone gives the group an epic scale that takes these guys out of the garage and into the stadiums. Several tracks were previewed on the Invicta EP ("Gravity," "Earthquake," "All the Weight"), and they're a good sampling of what goes on here. The atmosphere is charged for the power chords driving "Gravity," while Nick Thompson's vocals bring out the pop charm of "Get to You". "So Guilty" casts its hook back to the '80s, where the tune would've fit right in with the likes of mainstream pop acts like Mr. Mister and The Outfield. There's an extra electronic flash to the effect-heavy "Float Through Me". As with much emo, the power's in the execution of the formula: the tight harmonies that support the sing-along choruses, the combustive drums, and the distorted guitars that chime into the night air. This bonus track version includes the video for the pure emo-pop single "Earthquake".
