Hello Baby lives up to its flirtatious name with 12 irresistibly upbeat soul pastiches. Good times are the name of the game, meted out by some pitch-perfect guest vocalists. Elliott Cole is Gibbons’ own James Brown, lending fire to “Nothing Personal” and “I Got the Rhythm”, which samples Aretha Franklin’s “Respect”. Joss Stone plays hype girl on the ska-inflected “Take You Home”, and Juliette Ashby the 60s ingénue on the kitschy “All My Love”. Gibbons also chucks in a bit of disco and ska for good measure on this fabulous melting pot of a record.
