A child star who appeared in TV commercials and sitcom guest spots (Mr. Belvedere, Roseanne, Growing Pains), Jenny Lewis grew up and found herself fronting L.A.'s indie-rock sensation Rilo Kiley. Three critically acclaimed albums precede this decision to try her hand at flying solo with the Watson Twins as her vocal backup. Rabbit Fur Coat is a sweeping collection of dreamscape ballads and Petula Clark-styled pop that drips with rainy-day ambience. "You Are What You Love" sashays with a lightness of being that conjures up images of young Jenny starring in a film from the French New Wave cinema of the early ‘60s, while "Melt Your Heart" recalls the austere loneliness of Lucinda Williams, as the night's empty promise is perfectly mirrored in the distancing slapback echo applied to Lewis' voice. There's even a playful cover of the Traveling Wilbury's "Handle With Care", with Bright Eyes' Conor Oberst playing the Bob Dylan role and M. Ward assisting as the Jeff Lynne of the project.
