Future Me Hates Me

Future Me Hates Me

“The Beths is almost reactionary to jazz school and trumpet,” lead singer-songwriter Elizabeth Stokes told Rolling Stone of the Auckland pop-punk group she named after herself. Considering Stokes is a former jazz student, trumpeter and folk artist, the perky, guitar-based project may have been unexpected, but it gave her an energetic outlet for emotional honesty. She ponders looming heartbreak on the title track, tries to forget someone on “Happy Unhappy”, and self-deprecates on “You Wouldn’t Like Me”. The sincere, personal themes may not fit the bright music, but that’s intentional: Stokes may be pouring her heart out, but she sure makes it sound fun.
