Opening with the telltale ring of an old-school mobile, Australian alt-metal squad Ocean Grove’s second full-length album indulges in some conceptual retro-futurism to accompany their high-energy blend of nu-metal, post-grunge and hip-hop. Pining for the pre-smartphone era at the turn of the millennium, vocalist Dale Tanner filters a modern lyrical perspective through the technological kaleidoscope of a not-so-distant past. Opener “SUPERSTAR” fuses stun-gun guitars to hip-hop bravado before the chaotic industrial blast of “NEO” gives way to Tanner’s anthemic Britpop delivery on “SUNNY” and “SHIMMER”. Later, 2019 single “ASK FOR THE ANTHEM” reappears in full dance-rock effect before the fantasy concludes with the jangly twang of “FREAKS”.
