Every time Tucker Halpern and Sophie Hawley-Weld perform live, the dance-pop duo known as Sofi Tukker warm up with a workout. By the time they’re due onstage, they feel “loose, sweaty and ready to explode out of a cannon”, Halpern tells Apple Music. For their exclusive Apple Music Fitness Mix for running, they assembled their ideal soundtrack for a pre-show session. “Our goal was to get people moving,” Hawley-Weld says. “We wanted to make the type of mix where even if you're not in the mood and you're feeling sluggish, you end up wanting to work out.” They structured the mix to match the momentum of a workout: It begins with an active warm-up, builds into a cardio session and then briefly turns down the dial for some ab work before bursting back into cardio. “By the end, the endorphins are flying,” says Hawley-Weld. “You're listening to [Bob Sinclar’s] ‘World, Hold On’ and [Sam Smith’s cover of Donna Summer’s] ‘I Feel Love’. You're feeling amazing about yourself.” Halpern's favourite selection is “Summer in New York”, a smoky cut from their 2022 album WET TENNIS that samples Suzanne Vega’s “Tom’s Diner”, that iconic 1987 bop with an unmistakable “do-do-do-do”. “When you hear this, you just want to take a shower, throw on your best clothes, walk out into the street, make some friends, have a night, do your thing,” Halpern says. “That’s what this song—and a good workout—makes me want to do.”
