Fill Me In (Apple Music Home Session) - Single

With his exclusive Apple Music Home Session, Craig David harks back to a golden age for cross-Atlantic R&B. “‘Say My Name’ was actually released at the same time as ‘Fill Me In’,” David tells Apple Music of that auspicious week in April 2000. “For me to actually sing the song here brought back all the memories of that week and getting my first solo number one.” The Southampton singer-songwriter may have held off Beyoncé, Kelly and Michelle at the top of the UK singles chart with his debut solo single, but he’s under no illusions about the quality of that Destiny’s Child classic. “It’s easily one of the best Destiny’s Child songs,” he says. “Just incredible writing and the melody’s amazing. It’s a song that any songwriter would say, ‘I wish I had written that.’ It rang true for so many people—it just cuts to the chase.” Recording the cover also helped remind David of some early inspirations. “It brought back for me everything I got into R&B for,” he says. “Destiny’s Child were coming onto the scene, Wyclef, Usher, Mario, Faith Evans, Mary J. Blige, Ne-Yo—everyone was dropping seminal albums. I am so grateful to have grown up in that period, and any time I see any Instagram pages throwing back to that era, I just get these feelings. I feel like a kid again who’s running up to London from Southampton on the train, buying records and vinyl. It was such a good feeling, and something that I will always cherish. It’s never going to feel or be like that because we are in a different time and a different space, but to experience that, plus also now being in the current climate of how music is discovered and heard is just amazing. I’m getting two bites of a cherry that are very different but very, very sweet.” Enjoy David’s Destiny’s Child cover, plus stripped-back versions of the seminal “Fill Me In” and 2021 MNEK collab “Who You Are”.
