Firebrand pianist Jerry Lee Lewis consolidated his many strengths on this revitalising 1979 album, which also tapped Elvis’ former guitarist James Burton. “Rockin’ My Life Away” packs a mouthy mission statement, while an unlikely cover of Bob Dylan’s “Rita May” is a swaggering showcase of muscle and hustle. Yet for all those reminders of his rock credentials, Lewis brings a lived-in richness to several country numbers, including Charlie Rich’s “Who Will the Next Fool Be?” and the surprisingly funky “Every Day I Have to Cry”.
