Tom Zé’s wacky yet wonderful 2010 release Estudando a Bossa explores the many sides of Brazilian folk with an idiosyncratic edge. Zé effortlessly manoeuvers the weird and the smooth; hush-hush voices and flamboyant vibratos glide over lilting, occasionally dissonant nylon guitars as the Tropicália veteran keeps things unpredictable and exciting. Airy harmonies and limber arpeggios breeze through “O Céu Desabou” like on a windy Brazilian beach, and the quirky “Filho do Pato” keeps layers of odd vocal beatboxing at the forefront of that mellifluous song.
