English Electric

English Electric

Released just three years after their 2010 comeback album, English Electric flashes back to the streamlined electro-pop of OMD’s early years, but with a sumptuous, high-tech sound. Pairing icy arpeggios with Paul Humphreys’ warm voice, “Metroland” is a sterling example of the band’s electrifying use of contrast, while “Night Café” flaunts the fetching sentimentality that made them ‘80s soundtrack staples. The closing cut, a take on Kurt Weill and Langston Hughes’ “Final Song”, soars aloft on weightless synths and a stunning Abbey Lincoln sample.
