EDITORS’ NOTES

Farewell, The Coral’s jangly indie disco sing-alongs. 20 years since forming in Merseyside and six years after their sixth album was released, the band reemerge a far trippier proposition armed with their heaviest album yet. It’s a maturation that suits them. “Connector” and “White Bird” are a barnstorming pair of opening tracks—all hypnotic vocals, buzzsaw guitars and swirling synths—and Distance Inbetween mines the dark corners of psychedelica throughout. While the mood may have darkened, “Miss Fortune” and “Beyond the Sun” both tip their caps to the band’s grand melodic heritage.
