18 Songs, 1 Hour 15 Minutes

EDITORS’ NOTES

Depeche Mode often sound like they’re thumbing through their own glorious past on their 13th album. “Heaven”, “Goodbye,” and “Slow” all simmer with the union of blues and electronica that served them so well on 1990’s Violator and 1993’s Songs of Faith and Devotion, while “Soothe My Soul”’s terrific electro-glam thump recalls the hooks and angst of ’80s Mode. It’s not just about echoing former glories though: minimalist-techno ballad “My Little Universe” is thrillingly forward-looking.
