David Bednall is fast becoming one of the UK’s most-admired composers of choral music. His easy melodies, scrunchy harmonies (more than a splash of French influence here) and heart-stopping vocal textures appeal as much to singers as to listeners, and that enjoyment of engaging with his music comes across in this magnificent recording. The young voices of The Epiphoni Consort wrap themselves around this music, and the recorded sound at St. John the Evangelist, in South London’s Upper Norwood, is fabulously well managed—the opening, 40-part motet “Lux Orta Est Iusto” simply takes the breath away.
