Apple Music Home Session: HIRA (Apple Music Home Session)

With a little help from his friends, HIRA covers a Queen classic for his Apple Music Home Session. “We had fun trying to put the song in the context of music of the time I was growing up, especially that early 2000s, Neptunes-style synth sound,” he tells Apple Music. “There are a lot of difficult reasons why Freddie Mercury’s South Asian heritage is often overlooked. What better occasion than this month to celebrate it instead! And of course, I had to get A. K. Paul in to get that fretless bass singing with me!” Before his stirring cover of “Cool Cat” (from the legendary rock band’s tenth album Hot Space), the British-Indian singer-songwriter and producer frees an unreleased gem with a stripped-back spin. “It has an honesty I don’t think I’ve explored before,” he says of writing “Don’t Take It”. “The produced version has the same lyrics, but the sonic environment paints a completely different emotion—that one’s got anger. But this was a great opportunity to explore how a different arrangement can change the whole sentiment of what I’m saying.”
