There’s a palpable sense of freedom coursing through the first three songs of Max Changmin’s solo debut. “Chocolate” is a hyperactive pop workout at maximum lung capacity. “High Heels” bites a chunk off a Sugarhill Gang bassline for a catwalk throwdown (“Where’s my suit and tie?” he wonders, nodding to 20/20 Experience-era Justin Timberlake, which Chocolate compares favourably to). Then “Lie” brings guest CHUNG HA into the mix for a tender EDM-tinged treat. But with all the star power and flossy uptempo looks, he retreats to the softer corners of his mind during the second half. “No Tomorrow” begins as an acoustic ballad before rising in tempo and energy, while “Me, Myself & I” explores solitude (“I’m so freakin’ over you,” he gently muses) over a jazzy guitar groove. Like its namesake, Chocolate is smooth, decadent, sometimes bitter, yet leaves you wanting more.
