Candy Bar Creep Show - EP

MS MR is a Brooklyn-based chillwave duo that calls its music a blend of “Tumblr glitch pop, soul fuzz, and electro-shock”. Preferring the anonymity of English honorifics, MS (Lizzy Plapinger from Neon Gold Records) takes on all vocal duties as MR (Max Hershenow) handles music and production. Following a flurry of online buzz around the MS MR single “Hurricane” in July 2012, the duo signed to Sony. Named after a first-season episode of Rugrats, Candy Bar Creep Show opens with “Bones”, a gloomy serenade trimmed in piano, orchestral arrangements, and a bombastic rhythm section as Plapinger sings like a tougher version of Bat for Lashes' Natasha Khan. The aforementioned “Hurricane” follows, with marching rhythms, bassy drones, and more dramatic strings, which help punctuate the darkness of Plapinger’s lyrics. “Dark Doo Wop” makes good on its name with a post-goth take on the bygone genre. Here Hershenow drives the string arrangements to sound like a slowed-down and blown-up Phil Spector production. Over this, Plapinger’s demure coos and some fingersnaps help make the song a cool standout.
