Boiler Room: Jamie xx in London, Jun 23, 2014 (DJ Mix)

Jamie xx played Young Turks’ Boiler Room party on a London rooftop the same week that his 2014 single “All Under One Roof Raving” came out, which helps explain his opening selections. Breakbeat pioneer DJ SS’s 1992 cut “Respect to the Following” kicks things off with a roll call of scene luminaries; a selection from Mark Leckey’s 1999 art installation Fiorucci Made Me Hardcore casts a nostalgic glance back at the rave scene’s glory days. The rest of the set juxtaposes parallel strains of London dance music—Wiley’s grime, Crazy Cousinz’s UK funky, Tuff Jam’s UK garage—with forays into The Durutti Column and XTC. The effect is to spin the history of UK underground music into a kaleidoscopic vista, unified yet infinitely varied.
