Following the elemental theme of 2024’s climate-change meditation From the Fire, Audrey Powne’s second album wields water as a metaphor for social harmony and discord alike. It also finds the Melbourne-born, London-based composer juggling an impressive amount of duties as vocalist, trumpeter, keyboardist and producer. Even more striking is how nimbly Powne blends spiritual and cosmic jazz influences with varying shades of hip-hop, Afrobeat and neo-soul. Tracks like “Swollen” and “Karma” emphasise Powne’s smooth, expressive vocals while still leaving room for a funky rhythm section and spacey instrumental washes. As producer, Powne ensures that there are multiple levels of focus on each track: observe the layer-cake effect of the couched vocal harmonies, prominent trumpet hits and other staggered elements in the midsection of “Creeds”. Heartfelt lyrics about social cohesion provide another focal point, though Powne makes certain that the songs’ individual messages don’t distract from the free-flowing arrangements and more exploratory impulses at play.
