The More Outspoken One ,

Prog Symphony

For those familiar with Magenta's output, this will come as a (pleasesant) surprise. It's a great piece of music, strongly referencing the Celtic-rooted music of Iona.
What Rob Reed does most cleverly is combine various styles of prog-related music, opera and orchestration to blend his work into a cohesive whole, rather than being tempted to chuck bits in just to show how 'right-on' his influences are.
My favourite bits are the shorter, pacier pieces where he uses choral chant techniques with the vocals, reminiscisent of Kate Bush's Aerial. He also has an inate knack for bringing the lengthier parts back to the underlying theme just at the right time. Ueilliann pipes are always a personal favourite and here their interplay with the lead guitar is tremendous.
In the past this would have been a 'concept' album but it's just a great story beautifully told in music and song. Lovely, stirring stuff.
