“I love sad songs sung sad,” Lola Young tells Apple Music. “I love it when a song is famous for being uplifting, but [reinterpreting it] with a slightly different energy and mood exposes it as being super sad. Here, the fast-rising talent strips it right back to offer haunting, gloriously blue takes on Wham!’s “Last Christmas” and Whitney Houston’s “I Wanna Dance With Somebody (Who Loves Me)”, while also offering a stirring rendition of her own “Pick Me Up”. “These are the kinds of songs I enjoy singing in private when there’s no-one around,” adds Young. “[Doing this] felt very intimate and personal.”
