Apple Music Home Session: Lola Young

“I love sad songs sung sad,” Lola Young tells Apple Music. “I love it when a song is famous for being uplifting, but [reinterpreting it] with a slightly different energy and mood exposes it as being super sad. And suddenly it takes on a whole new meaning.” That’s exactly what you can expect from the south London singer’s Apple Music Home Session—the series where we ask some of our favourite artists to set up at home and rework their own, and other people’s, signature tracks. Here, the fast-rising talent strips it right back to offer haunting, gloriously blue takes on Wham!’s “Last Christmas” and Whitney Houston’s “I Wanna Dance With Somebody (Who Loves Me)”, while also offering a stirring rendition of her own “Pick Me Up”. “These are the kinds of songs I enjoy singing in private when there’s no-one around,” adds Young. “[Doing this] felt very intimate and personal.”
