Apple Music Home Session: The Lathums

For indie four-piece The Lathums, recording an Apple Music Home Session was a chance to discover more about a favourite song from 2020’s Ghosts EP. “‘Foolish Parley’ just has its own thing, it sounds good no matter how it’s played, so that was a big positive when picking what ones to do,” drummer Ryan Durrans tells Apple Music. “You can hear more of the song because there’s less going on, there’s less to listen to. It’s a really great way to connect with the song and create more emotion behind it all.” The Wigan band then performed a sharp left turn when choosing a song to cover, conjuring up “Numa Numa Yey”—their take on the Moldovan Eurodance classic “Dragostea Din Tei” by O-Zone. “It was a spur-of-the-moment idea; we were trying to think of covers no one had ever done,” says Durrans. “For a guitar band to do an acoustic dance tune seemed pretty far out of the box.” To hear them working with ideas so far removed from their own spry, guitar-driven indie isn’t a surprise. One of the positives the band have drawn from the lockdowns of 2020 and 2021 is that it’s given them the time to explore the boundaries of their sound. “It’s shown me where we really thrive and what we’re capable of offstage,” says Durrans. “It’s pushed our creative boundaries to stay relevant during a time where it’s not really possible to reach your fans. We’re constantly exploring different sounds and genres for our music, but this time has really allowed us to delve into what actually gives the song a genre.”
