Apple Music Home Session: Shygirl

Electronic pop adventurer Shygirl achieves a childhood dream by covering Seal’s contribution to the Batman Forever soundtrack, “Kiss from a Rose”, for her Apple Music Home Session. “I was a real Batman nerd when I was a kid,” she tells Apple Music’s Matt Wilkinson. “I had all the Batman toys, and soundtracks really helped me immerse myself in the world. I used to pretend to sing this in the mirror when I was a kid. I didn't know if I was going to be on Stars in Their Eyes—that I thought I was going to come out and be Seal. So I finally get to realise that moment a little bit here. I also just really love hearing an emotional male vocal. There’s something in that I really enjoy.” Shygirl also re-works “Coochie (a bedtime story)” from her debut album Nymph, released on 30 September. Stripping out the electronics and replacing them with a harp, the track is the latest evidence that we should always expect the unexpected and unique from the London artist. “After putting out [2020 project] Alias, I felt like everyone had an opinion of me or of what they wanted from me and I didn't quite know what I wanted from myself,” she says. “And this album was kind of asserting what I wanted for myself a little bit, putting a little time stamp on this is who I am right now in this moment and I’m saying it.”
