Apple Music Home Session: Joy Crookes

Ask Joy Crookes to set up at home and re-interpret her—and other people’s—signature tracks, and you know the south London singer will deliver something special. On her Apple Music Home Session, Crookes strips back two of her own, powerfully honest tracks (2020’s “Anyone But Me”—a stunning exploration of going through mental health issues—and “Two Nights”, from 2019, on which she deliberates on finding new love), while offering a whimsical, jazz-imbued take on Wham!’s iconic “Last Christmas”. A gorgeous, mournful saxophone floats across the entire EP—the making of which was a novel experience for Crookes. “Recording the saxophone was a little unusual for me, especially to do it from home,” the singer-songwriter tells Apple Music. “But I love it.” Delivered in December, the session also allowed her to embrace covering a Christmas classic. “I wanted to challenge myself to do a Christmas song in a non-cheesy way and I really like what we’ve done,” she says. “When you cover a song, it’s like you get to unfold it and understand all of its beauty. ‘Last Christmas’ is a really emotional song.” At the end of 2020—a year that has felt turbulent for so many of us—what has Crookes learnt? “This period has made me even more reflective,” she says. “Musicians are no strangers to isolation, but we usually decide when those periods begin and end. This feeling of loss of control globally has made me so eager to maintain my own using music.”
