Apple Music Home Session: HRVY

Faced with an extended period at home during 2020, HRVY kicked into gear and began acting on previously shelved plans. “Before lockdown I never downloaded Logic on my laptop ever,” the singer-songwriter tells Apple Music. “I never thought about producing my own vocals, any of that kind of stuff—because I always took it for granted that I could go to studios, just sing and there would be an engineer to make it sound amazing.” Despite establishing a robust home set-up, inspiration for his Apple Music Home Session track came from another address. “Towards the end of lockdown, I would visit my manager and he would always be blasting reggae through the house,” he says. So when he suggested ‘Baby, I Love Your Way’, I thought it could be kind of sick if we slowed it down and made it a ballad, because I love singing sad music. I love singing songs that don’t have a piano underneath it and some violins.” The charming cover houses the laidback vibe HRVY was aiming to capture. “When I was recording the song I had this towel,” he says. “I’d seen on the Travis Scott documentary that, when he was recording, he put a blanket or a towel over his head and over the mic. My room has an echo and that helps to stop the sound from travelling around the room, so I thought that was really cool. It’s nice being able to relax and experiment and not be under pressure with other writers in the room and big, big producers and stuff like that. I’ve been able to relax, do me and not have to think about anything else.”
