Apple Music Home Session: Ella Henderson

Apple Music Home Session: Ella Henderson

“For me lockdown in 2020 was a real eye-opener,” Ella Henderson tells Apple Music. “I soon realised that without life the way it was, music really was the only thing I had to turn to. It kept me sane, happy and hopeful. Songwriting and being sat at the piano was my main form of therapy.” One such session brought about two intimate tracks that showcase the Lincolnshire singer’s voice beautifully. “These versions add a different flavour to the originals,” she says. “I wanted people to hear two great songs that we all know, but produced and performed in a way you might not have yet heard.” First up, Henderson’s hit duet with Tom Grennan, “Let’s Go Home Together”. “This song has lived for a long time as I wrote it nearly five years ago with James Arthur,” she says. “We both knew at the time it was something unique and special. ‘Black Hole’, meanwhile, is one of my favourite recent songs! I am a diehard Griff fan, and I just think this song is so different. I wanted to create a live version from home that felt raw but still vibey.” Fast-forward to February 2022, and Henderson has added two new tracks to her Home Session EP. “Amy Winehouse is one of my idols,” she says, explaining the choice of Amy classic “Tears Dry on Their Own”. “Back to Black was a huge part of my teenage years and it inspired me to be a musician growing up. For me Amy is one of the best storytellers of all time, and her lyrics are mesmerising, and so raw and honest.” There are some Winehouse parallels to be drawn in the EP’s other new addition. “‘Brave’ means a lot to me,” she says. “It reflects back to a lot of my personal struggles with mental health, and the song for me is an empowering anthem to get you through a tough time. I think it’s the kind of song we all probably need right now after these last couple of years.”
