Drawing on three of his best-loved and longest running musicals, Andrew Lloyd Webber receives the full symphonic treatment. Evita, Sunset Boulevard and The Phantom of the Opera all lend themselves naturally to this full-orchestra approach and the resulting album is truly de luxe. The big tunes—and these three shows have plenty—sing out in their new symphonic garb with terrific impact, each with a markedly different soundworld. Superbly recorded at Lloyd Webber’s Theatre Royal Drury Lane in London, this album is like a 24-carat fanfare to the West End’s reopening after the 2020 pandemic. It is, too, an eloquent reminder of what a terrific melodist Lloyd Webber is.
