A Year in the Life is like a time-lapse film that cuts out all the humdrum bits and focuses squarely on peak-time hours in dark clubs. Toolroom founder Mark Knight excels at dramatic, high-intensity chuggers, and that's what he delivers here, from the Detroit-inspired synths and baritone voiceover of "Rocket Man" to the seesawing bass and snare rolls of the disco-sampling "Freak Out". "Dance on My Heart" seduces with hypnotic synths and vocal loops, and "Chaos Theory" is a riot of ricocheting polyrhythms. The whole thing is a sweaty tribute to classic house.
