A Winter Tale is the auspicious debut by talented British singer, songwriter, and guitarist Bobby Long. His command of British and American folk traditions is evident in his finely honed, romantic lyrics as well as his confident finger-picking technique that is showcased on solo tunes like “The Bounty of Mary Jane” and “Sick Man Blues”. Filled with metaphors, introspective musings, and poetic phrases, the lyrics are cleanly enunciated in an earthy semi-rasp that makes him sound older than his 24 years. When backed by a full band, as he is for the majority of these songs, a rousing folk-rock vibe comes across. Standout tunes, including “Who Have You Been Loving”, “Penance Fire Blues”, “Being a Mockingbird”, and the title track, feature piano, pedal steel, electric guitar, and some excellent backing vocals to create a rich, full sound. A Winter Tale is a mature and impressive first effort by a young artist to watch.
