Having tried out sleek electro-pop with 2011’s Echoes, Will Young hops into more genres on his sixth album. He lands halfway between synth psychedelia and stadium pop on “Blue”, kicks up a Motown-funk rumble on “Love Revolution” and revels in orchestral grandeur on “Thank You”. Throughout his career though, it’s often been ballads that have most effectively framed his soulful yearning–and the stately “Like a River” is Young at his heartbroken best.
