11 Songs, 36 Minutes

EDITORS’ NOTES

On their third album, Sharon Jones & The Dap-Kings move away from their earlier, more funk-hued efforts and instead mine a ‘60s-sounding Motown style full of slinky horns and spry soul grooves. The Supremes-esque “Tell Me” showcases Jones’ phenomenal vocal control, while “Nobody’s Baby” riffs over a swinging R&B beat. There are quieter moments in the barnstorming party, however: “Humble Me” is a smooth ballad laced with raw emotion, and “Answer Me” sees Jones returning to her gospel roots.
